Diacritics in file names (e.g. "å", "ä", "ö")

Post by vasinvictor »

Hi guys,
Just got my Bubba Two today and I am a pretty happy camper so far. :)
One single annoying thing that I discovered so far:

I have all my FLAC music on a USB disk, but I plan to move it inside my Bubba on its 1TB disk, and continue using the external USB drive as a back up.

I am mainly going to use my Bubba as a Squeezebox server.

Here is what I did:
1- Connect USB drive to Bubba.
2 - Copy files from the USB drive (\\bubba\storage\disk_0\Music) to the Bubba HD (\\bubba\home\storage\music)

Symptom:
File names containing diacritics (i.e. crazy letters like "å" or "ö") appear changed in the bubba fileserver, both if you are using the web interface AND when using a Windows explorer window.

E.g. a file called "Björnen sover.flac" becomes "Bj_rnen sover.flac"

Strange (and good) thing is though that the names of the files are not changed. They just look weird in the bubba file browser.
In the Squeeze Central software (Squeezebox server), the files seem to have OK names (Björnen sover.flac).

Do you guys have the same problem? Do you have a solution for it?

Thanks a lot
Victor

I have no problems at all with this. Set your web browser to view
"Character Encoding" or "Encoding" to Unicode UTF-8.

Thank you for answering, but unfortunately it didn't help.
BTW the problem arises both in the internet browser (I tried both IE and Firefox) AND in the WIndows Explorer window.
Changing character encoding from Western (which was the default on my Firefox) to Unicode didn't help.

Other ideas?
Best regards,
Victor

Hmm maybe run the setup wizard under settings and look for locale settings to UTF-8.
If you connect with ssh can you type åäö and see them correctly?

well, I solved this via a work-around: in stead of connecting the USB disk to bubba directly, I connected it to my home PC and then I copied files from there to the bubba HD.
So the problem is not really solved, but it doesnt bother me anymore :)
